Every journalist and blogger I’ve spoken to has told me that they get a large volume of press releases each day. I recently received a letter from a reporter who works at a tiny local daily. He told me that in one day, his publication received 80 press releases, but only two of those releases were related to the content that his paper covers.
This did not come as a surprise to me since I had been exposed to this narrative on several occasions. However, it did have me wondering: how many press releases are issued each day?
In the past, when I attempted to locate this information, I was unsuccessful. I made the decision to give it one more go, and this time I chose to pose the query to prominent news distribution firms such as PR Newswire, BusinessWire, Marketwire, and PRWeb by utilizing Twitter.
Each PR Newswire and BusinessWire answered within a few hours with almost similar information: they both distribute around 1,000 releases per day, for a total of 2,000. However, due to unique features and very active news times, this number may sometimes go even higher.
When should you submit the press release that you’ve written?
Between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm is the optimal time to send a press release, since this is the window of time during which editors read around one-third of all the emails they have received.
Between the hours of six and ten in the morning, open rates only average 20.5%. This indicates that the early morning hours are less effective. If you do choose the early morning, however, we strongly suggest that you hold off until at least the eight or nine o’clock hour.

Keep in mind that some of your receivers may be in a different time zone, and adapt your sending schedule appropriately. This is the last but most important tip.
